Twitter had 166 million daily users in the first quarter of 2020. Although, this is likely due to people visiting the microblogging site so as to keep up with news on the coronavirus pandemic.
This is the most number of daily users Twitter has ever reported year-over-year. The numbers represent growth from the 134 million daily users it had in the first quarter of 2019 and 152 million daily users at the end of 2019.
In spite of the numbers, the company’s ad revenue began falling in March 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Twitter saw a 27 percent drop in year-over-year ad revenue from 11th March 2020.
The company also posted its first loss since 2017 after missing out on the $20 million to $80 million that it had initially projected to generate at the end of the month.

Twitter says the quarter can be seen as “two distinct periods. January through early March, which largely performed as expected” and “early March through the end of the quarter, when the pandemic became global”.
According to the company, the downturn “was particularly pronounced in the US.”
