Twitter, on Thursday, began allowing users ‘hide’ tweeted replies that they found abusive or harassing. This the latest effort by the online platform to create a more welcoming environment.

This move will allow users to “feel safe and comfortable while talking on Twitter,” Suzanne Xie head of product management said in a statement.

Also, users can still engage hidden replies by tapping a gray icon that will appear. However, they will no longer be active parts of the main replies tweet, according to Twitter.

“This way, you have more control over the conversations you start, but people can still see the entire conversation,” Xie said.

The microblogging site earlier this year introduced the option to hide replies to tweets in some countries. This option is to help foster more reasonable online conversations.

According to Twitter, tests show that it is a useful tool for managing the back-and-forth exchanges tweets. During testing, hidden tweets were typically considered “irrelevant, off-topic, or annoying,” Xie said.

Feature rolling out globally

“We’re exploring more options around who can reply to or see specific conversations, testing engagement changes to see if these lead to healthier discussions,” Twitter said.

This ‘hide’ feature is rolling out globally on twitter.com and in updates to the mobile app.

Meanwhile, in September, Twitter began letting users hide away unwanted direct messages, providing a new tool to prevent abuse.

In 2016, the social company started letting users eliminate, or mute, notifications based on keywords, phrases or entire conversations they are not interested in seeing. This was part of its effort to hinder abusive comments.
