Twitter loses ad clients over child abuse Tweets

Twitter ad clients such as Dyson, Mazda, and chemicals company Ecolab, suspended their marketing campaigns over child abuse Tweets. The companies complained that their ads appeared alongside Tweets soliciting sensitive child contents.

According to a research by cybersecurity group Ghost Data, more than 30 brands ads appeared alongside Twitter accounts that mention child abuse content. Some of the brands include Walt Disney, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Coca-Cola.

A shoe and accessories brand known as Cole Haan saw that their promoted Tweet was showing next to another one where the users boldly claimed to be trading teen and children content.

“We’re horrified, either Twitter is going to fix this, or we’ll fix it by any means we can, which includes not buying Twitter ads,” David Maddocks, brand president at Cole Haan, told Reuters.

Another example was when the promoted tweet for Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, Texas, appeared next to one of such Tweets.

This is not the first time that the issue of child exploitation content on Twitter has been mentioned. However, it is the first time that advertisers are coming out to speak against the issue as it now affects how people see their campaigns.

While Twitter claims to have a zero-tolerance for such content, it appears that its efforts to battle them is not sufficient. The criticism comes at a time when Twitter is in a court battle with Elon Musk over its inefficiency in weeding out fake accounts.

Although purveyors of child exploitation content use different means to stay under the radar, including substituting words that could easily be flagged for code words, the social media company is still blamed for not doing enough.
