It is transfer season, apparently, not just for football but for tech companies. Embattled TikTok is trying to escape a ban in the US, and for a while, Microsoft seemed like the only willing suitor, now it appears there’s also interest from Twitter.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Twitter has held preliminary discussions concerning a “combination” with TikTok. According to the WSJ, it’s not clear if Twitter’s interest is similar to Microsoft’s proposed acquisition, but any deal will not be without complications.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates describes a deal for the viral video app as a ‘poisoned chalice’. Likely, many people will agree as it seems that it just has too many complications.

Critically, the Trump administration’s executive order on 6th August 2020 bars TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, from handling transactions in the US. The order takes effect within 45 days.

The WSJ believes that twitter would be considered as underdogs, with Microsoft the likely front runners in any TikTok deal. WSJ also believes that Twitter’s smaller size in comparison with Microsoft will likely subject it to less antitrust scrutiny than Microsoft, hence making a deal a little smoother for it. However, an obvious disadvantage for Twitter is that Microsoft can rally much more finances to complete an acquisition.

Microsoft claims that its CEO Satya Nadella had spoken to President Trump about a possible TikTok acquisition. The acquisition would include TikTok operations in the US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Microsoft says it expects to finalise the acquisition by 15th September 2020.
