Twitter has begun testing the voice chat rooms it first announced in November 2020 called spaces. Announcing the test, the company says a very small group of users will get the ability to create voice-based chat rooms. However, anyone can join the room, however, the user who created the Space will determine who can be allowed into a conversation.
aye we’re live! what up y’all, we’re the team behind Spaces––a small experiment focused on the intimacy of the human voice🧵

Twitter had outlined during the first announcement its process of selecting who it will give access to Spaces. The company said they would be women and people from other marginalised communities, groups who are more likely than others to be subjected to abuse and harassment when trying to engage in conversations in regular, comment-based discussions on the platform.
This makes it seem that the biggest focus for Spaces is moderation. Spaces allows the creators to control who can or cannot speak in the Space. There are also reporting and blocking features in the feature.
Twitter is also testing on other features for spaces like emoji reactions, being able to share tweets in a Space, and a “very early version” of live voice transcription.
You can only access a Space using the Twitter mobile app and it requires you to have Periscope integration enabled.
