Twitch has confirmed that its 2020 US conference known as TwitchCon San Diego is now canceled. The streaming platform mentioned the pandemic as the reason for arriving at that decision.

“Due to restrictions on large gatherings and ongoing concerns for the health and safety of our community, the Twitch team, and the local San Diego community, we have decided to cancel TwitchCon San Diego this fall,” Twitch said in a statement. The streaming platform also put up the statement on its Twitter page.

Twitch had earlier canceled TwitchCon Amsterdam in March 2020. The event had been scheduled for 2nd to 3rd May 2020 but could not hold due to the pandemic and the shelter in place orders.

As for TwitchCon San Diego, the event was previously scheduled to hold from 25th to 27th September 2020. Although the world is recovering from the pandemic and the lockdowns are easing, it still isn’t safe for large gatherings.

Twitch in its statement, however, looks like it is leaving open the possibility of still hosting the conference this year, which would most likely be online. “While we can’t gather in person, we’re exploring ways that we could join forces in an alternate dimension later this year,” Its statement said.

A lot of organisers have cancelled their conferences this year and many more will most likely follow suit going forward. It will be difficult to get back to large conferences and gatherings till 2021 at least.
