Trump On A$AP Rocky Case: ‘Sweden Has Let Our African American Community Down’

US President Donald Trump says he is disappointed in the Swedish Prime Minister. He says that Sweden has let the African American community down by refusing to free rapper A$AP Rocky. Rocky faces assault charges after a violent altercation on 30th June 2019.

Trump said in a tweet on Thursday that he was “very disappointed in Prime Minister Stefan Lofven for being unable to act. Sweden has let the African American Community down in the United States. I watched the tapes of A$AP Rocky, and he was being followed and harassed by troublemakers. Treat Americans fairly!”

He added in a later tweet, “Give A$AP Rocky his FREEDOM. We do so much for Sweden, but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem!” He ended both tweets with #FreeRocky.

The Swedish government said in response that all people in Sweden are equal before the law. The spokesperson to the Prime Minister emphasised the independence of the Swedish judicial system. Furthermore, he stated that the Executive arm would not try to influence or interrupt the ongoing proceedings of the judicial arm.

The court charged A$AP Rocky with assault on Thursday for the confrontation in Stockholm on 30th June.

The public prosecutor handling the case claims Rocky and the two other men assaulted a man by kicking him and also beating him with a glass bottle. Consequently, the Swedish prosecutors have charged the three of them for their involvement in the assault, and they will remain in custody until the trial begins on Tuesday.

The rapper’s lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, has maintained that A$AP Rocky is innocent and was acting in self-defence. He expressed his disappointment at the prosecutor’s decision to “go with the other party’s version” of events.

The video evidence uploaded on Rocky’s Instagram shows the rapper and his entourage repeatedly asking two men to stop following them. Additionally, the rapper wrote in a caption that one of the men hit one of his bodyguards “in the face with headphones”. He reasserted that he was innocent.

However, in another video posted by TMZ, A$AP Rocky grabs one of the men and throwing him to the ground. From another angle, the rapper and his companions appear to be kicking and punching the man.

Unfortunately, Trump’s efforts to get A$AP Rocky freed from Swedish prison seems like a failed Hail Mary. To many Americans, it looks like he is only doing this as either favour to the Kardashian-Wests or as a rebuttal for when anyone calls him a racist.

Until Tuesday, the popular rapper will remain in jail before facing the law as an equal member of society.
