Dean also appeared as the assassin Syonide in the DC Comics television series “Black Lightning,” which ran from 2018 to 2021 on the CW. She was born in Cape Town and raised there as Charlbi Dean Kriek.

Dean began modelling as a toddler and has since made several appearances on fashion runways and magazine covers. In 2009, she was in a near-fatal vehicle accident.

Dean made her acting debut in “Spud,” a 2010 film based on a renowned South African novel about a boys’ boarding school starring Troye Sivan and John Cleese. In a 2013 sequel, she repeated her role.

Dean and Harris Dickinson play a star fashion-model couple on a cruise for the ultra-rich that devolves into pandemonium in “Triangle of Sadness,” the first English-language film from Swedish “Force Majeure” filmmaker Ruben stlund. It also stars Woody Harrelson as the captain of the ship.

The film won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in May and will be released in the United States and much of Europe in October.

At the festival before the film won the award, Dean told The Associated Press, “For me, I’m like, I’ve already won. I’m already at Cannes with the movie. That’s so unbelievable. Anything is just a cherry on top at this point for me, you know?”
