Four people have been reportedly killed on Tuesday, 30th April 2019. According to reports, the incident occurred when a moving train crushed a trapped keke. This happened at the early hours of the morning along Iju-Fagba corridor of the railway line in Lagos State.
The Lagos District Superintendent, Mr Christian Madza, confirmed the news. He explained that the keke had veered onto the tracks, trying to outsmart the moving train in an attempt to cross. Unfortunately, the train ran over it at the railway level crossing. Madza said,
“That is what we have been repeating every time. Don’t play too smart on rail line because the train has its right of way.
“The tricycle rider was just trying to outsmart the train after the railway official had flagged them to stop for the oncoming train. It is so pathetic.”
According to Madza, the train was heading to Itoki from the Oke Aro station when it reportedly faced the keke. The crash made the train skid off-track and make an unusual stop a few seconds later.
He added,
“It was a ghastly accident, which should have been avoided if the tricyclist and other four people involved in it were careful. The train was on its track, but the huge traffic made the tricyclist to be trapped.”
Mr Christian Madza urged motorists to always obey signs and signals at various railway level crossings. The aim of this is to avoid such accidents in the future.
“Motorists and passersby always refuse to obey the signs and signals at railway level crossings. We appeal to them to be cognizant of these signs and for passersby to keep away from railway lines,” he said.
Reports reveal that clean-up commenced at the scene to evacuate the deceased.
