Tinder said that it is seeing an increase in daily average swipes on its app, adding that they reached “all-time highs”. The company also announced that it’s going to launch its own in-app one-on-one video chats later in 2020.

Tinder’s parent company, Match Group made the announcement in an earnings release according to The Verge.

In-app one-on-one video chats may be one of Tinder’s largest undertakings in recent times. The company is having to deal with abuse on its app and video chats may be a more difficult place for Tinder to moderate this abuse. Perhaps the idea is to make screening a potential date easier.

It also shared details on its brands’ performance amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the world is under strict lockdown guidelines making in-person dates impossible to a large extent.

Tinder Earnings report
Tinder is working on its own in-app, one-on-one video chats to be released later in 2020.

Tinder says women below the age of 30 increased their daily average swipes by 37 percent in April 2020 in comparison to the last week of February.

Match Group adds that the average number of daily messages sent across all of its products, including Hinge, Match.com, and OkCupid, April 2020 was 27 percent higher than during the last week of February. Users under the age of 30, sent daily messages 35 percent more times.

It further reports a decline in first-time paying users from February to March 2020. Although the numbers were still higher compared to the same period in 2019. It regained its subscriber momentum from March to April 2020.

“As the lockdowns have dragged on, we have seen some impact on younger male users, while there has been some recovery in the over 30 demographic,” the company says.

Match Group, however, believes that if the lockdown does not end soon, it might impact the people’s approach to dating.

“We are confident that demand for human connection will never dissipate and remain committed to fulfilling that need. This period of social isolation would have been much more dire for single people – who no longer have other avenues to meet and connect such as bars and concerts – if not for our products,” it said in its earnings note.
