Timaya Recounts Why He Sold Plantains As A Young Boy

Nigerian singer Intemini Timaya Odon, professionally known as Timaya, recently reminisced on his early years when he had to endure hardship.

The “Dem Mama” singer went down memory while speaking during a performance at the Coca-Cola Urban Music Festival held at the Eko Energy City, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday

“I used to sell plantain but now I am rich. I suffered so much as a boy but I am now a rich man. Thanks to God. If you’re here and you think you are suffering, do not give up. Keep pushing because you will surely succeed.

Timaya was the last performer at the event which also featured other artists including Wande Coal, Ycee, Buju, Omah Lay, Reekado Banks, Ajebo Hustlers, Cheque and Blaqbones.

Timaya began his solo career in 2005 with the release of “Dem Mama”, which also appeared on his debut album, “True Story” released in 2006. He further released his second album “Gift and Grace” in 2008.

Meanwhile, he gained further visibility and international prominence through his third studio album “De Rebirth”. He released the album in partnership with Black Body Entertainment. The album was a commercial success with his hit song “Plantain Boy”.

He collaborated with Dem Mama Soldiers on the album “LLNP” (Long Life N Prosperity). In 2012, Timaya released “Upgrade,” which had hits like “B*m B*m”, “S*xy Ladies”, and “Malonogede”.

His work has earned him several notable awards and nominations including four Headies Awards wins, 2 AFRIMMA Awards wins, one Nigeria Music Award and an NEA Award.
