TikTok refute claims that it was hacked

TikTok has assured users that their private data remains safe after a group posted what they claimed to be hacked source code and user info.

The group said that the data they breached stored more than 2 billion records and the file size was up to 790GB. They had shared screenshots of some of the details online, including user data, platform statistics, code, and others.

“We have confirmed that the data samples in question are all publicly accessible and are not due to any compromise of TikTok systems, networks, or databases. We do not believe users need to take any proactive actions, and we remain committed to the safety and security of our global community,” TikTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan told The Verge.

The hackers, who call themselves AgainstTheWest, said that they had gotten the data from WeChat, the Chinese messaging app.

Reports about the possible hack first surfaced early on Monday and it sent several users into a frenzy because some could have recorded sensitive videos using TikTok and saved them as private. Also, there is the general fear of your details being in the wrong hands.

The fact that the report started going round after Samsung confirmed a major breach also gave it some seeming level of credibility. It is a good thing that TikTok has been able to arrest the situation.

The last thing the social media company needs at this time is a lapse in security measures because it have been under pressure regarding its handling of customer data.
