Short Video-sharing platform, TikTok is donating £5m to a British nursing fund, to help it through the coronavirus pandemic. TikTok made the donation to the Royal College of Nursing Foundation.
The Foundation is part of the Royal College of Nursing Group and its COVID-19 Healthcare Support Appeal.
TikTok is also using its platform to promote videos of nursing staff as well as people praising their efforts. It says the donation would go towards emergency funding for frontline workers.
This will include practical and psychological support to nurses, midwives, healthcare support workers, paramedics, physiotherapists, cleaners and porters during and after the pandemic.
The app reveals that TikTok videos celebrating NHS and other healthcare workers have reached 330 million views in one month.

TikTok’s UK general manager, Rich Waterworth, hopes the donation can alleviate some of the pressures many of the workers dealt with.
“I would like to personally thank them for the work they are doing in these unprecedented times. Despite the huge challenges frontline healthcare workers face on a daily basis, I have been enormously heartened by what we are seeing on our platform,” Waterworth said in a statement.
UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock also commented on the donation:
“The whole country has been overwhelmed by the dedication and professionalism of all of our health and social care heroes battling against this global pandemic.
“I know the extraordinary pressures this virus has brought to professional and private lives, and I’m delighted that TikTok is supporting the RCN Foundation, which brings so much support to so many.”
The donation to the nursing fund is part of a bigger $325m TikTok is donating to health systems worldwide.
TikTok will also give out about $125 million in the form of ad credits. The $125 million will go to small-to-medium sized businesses, non-governmental organisations, local authorities and health bodies.
