The House Energy and Commerce Committee says that TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will testify on March 2023 on the security and privacy issues of the viral video sharing platform.

TikTok has been under the lens for over a year now regarding how it handles the data of American users. Before the investigation and probes began, the platform used to route data through its parent company, ByteDance, which is based in China.

The Chinese government could mandate employees to give up data with nothing more than an official communication. This aspect of the company’s operations troubled US lawmakers who have been in conflict with China in terms of commerce.

TikTok and ByteDance leaders promptly denied the interference of the Chinese government in its operations and soon moved to handling the data of American users in the country through Oracle. There were also several rumours that it was looking to sell its US business to Microsoft, an American conglomerate. Although, that deal didn’t see the light of day.

Yet, the persecution has not let up. In fact, if anything, it has increased. Recently, lawmakers banned the use of the app on government-owned devices.

“ByteDance-owned TikTok has knowingly allowed the ability for the Chinese Communist Party to access American user data. Americans deserve to know how these actions impact their privacy and data security, as well as what actions TikTok is taking to keep our kids safe from online and offline harms,” The House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, said in a statement.
