18-year-old Nigerian computer science student, Agbani Darego won the 51st Miss World pageant in 2001.
She was chosen from 93 contestants from all over the world. She had promoted herself as wanting to be a computer scientist as well as a supermodel.
Runners up were Zerelda Lee (Miss Aruba) and Juilet Horne (Miss Scotland). Jerry Springer U.S. TV talk show personality was the host. The event was projected to a global television audience of 1.2 billion people.
Held in Sun City, at South Africa, Darego won a total cash prize of $100,000, and also gifts valued at $150,000.
Priyanka Chopra who was the Miss World 2000, and now a popular Bollywood actress crowned her winner.

In the aftermath of her win in 2001, Darego got an honorary chieftaincy by the Council of Chiefs of Lagos. At the time of her investiture, she was one of the youngest chiefs in the country.
Due to her busy work schedule, Darego left the University of Port Harcourt. After moving to New York, she signed to Next Model Management and Ford Models.
She also enrolled with New York University to study Psychology and graduated in May 2012.
Meanwhile, Darego has judged numerous pageant, fashion, and modeling competitions including Miss World 2014, Miss England 2002, Mr. Scotland 2002, and Elite Model Look Nigeria 2012 and 2014.
Furthermore, in 2010, she launched a style and fashion reality show Stylogenic on Nigerian television, and three years later announced her denim range, AD by Agbani Darego, which includes jeans, dresses, sunglasses, and bags.
In April 2017, Darego married her longtime partner Ishaya Danjuma, son of billionaire General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, in a ceremony held in Marrakesh. Together, they have a son who was delivered in September 2018.
