Pinterest recently revealed a new feature that will suggest emotional well-being activities based on a user’s searches. It will trigger the response when a user shows signs of negative emotions through their search. The search could relate to anxiety, stress, depression or even suicidal thoughts.

The exercise was developed in partnership with the University of Stanford School of Medicine’s Brainstorm laboratory. One of the suggestions involves asking the user to take some deep breaths. Pinterest uses these prompting to steer its users in a positive direction. Words like mutilation, bulimia, cutting and suicide will trigger a message.

The app would make certain suggestions with messages like, “Are you struggling with an eating disorder? Help is available.” It could also go as far as directing the user to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. They directed a user from Nigeria to a worldwide suicide prevention site, Befrienders Worldwide.

Pinterest has also stopped putting out search results to controversial topics with bad information like Vaccines. Earlier this year, Instagram also had to crack down on anti-vaccine hashtags. It has been a big issue in the US in recent times with social media being used to spread false information.

The company names these searches compassionate search and it hopes to be able to fulfil the needs of some users. Project Manager at Pinterest, Annie Ta also said,

“We didn’t just decide to throw this in the app. We decided to put it in the app because people are already searching for these things so much.”
