According to CEO Sundar Pichai, Google isn’t committing to any policy that allows its employees to work remotely yet. This is, unlike other tech companies like Twitter, Shopify, and Facebook who have committed to some form of remote work going forward.

In an interview with Wired, Pichai said Google will instead be taking a more measured approach.

“How productive will we be when different teams who don’t normally work together have to come together for brainstorming, the creative process? We are going to have research, surveys, learn from data, learn what works,” Pichai said.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing guidelines, Google had been developing what could be termed ‘big office expansions’. This included new additions to its already massive headquarters in Mountain View, California. It is also developing a large campus in San Jose, California, and renovating a building in New York City.

Pichai has said that remote working won’t affect the aforementioned projects. He added that the company would always need physical spaces to get people together.

“In all scenarios I expect us to need physical spaces to get people together, absolutely. We have a lot of growth planned ahead. So even if there is some course correction, I don’t think our existing footprint is going to be the issue,” he said.

Pichai had previously announced that most of its employees would work remotely for the rest of 2020. He had also said that Google’s offices would operate at a 20% or 30% capacity by the end of the year with rotating schedules for employees.

Google had warned of a “difficult” second quarter for its ad business and slashed its marketing budget by almost half for the second half of 2020. The company has slowed hiring for the rest of the year as well.
