The Surface Laptop SE with Windows 11 is Microsoft’s latest plot to rival Google’s Chromebooks. The tech company earlier failed with its Mode S operating system in the 10th version of its operating system.
Microsoft’s newest laptop costs $249 for its base model, they ship as the company’s cheapest laptops to date. These new laptops will be sold only to students and schools, sharing some design language with the Surface Laptop Go.
The Surface SE Laptop has an all-plastic body with an 11.6 screen with a 1366 x 768 resolution. This low resolution is very comprising for its $249 price, very underwhelming. Also, Surface SE shares the same keyboard and trackpad found on the slightly higher Surface Laptop Go, so there’s no compromise here.
Interestingly, Microsoft is going with a 16:9 aspect ratio for this laptop, its first time since the Surface Pro 3 launch in 2014. Microsoft uses the 3:2 design aspect ratio for other Surface Laptops.

Under the hood of the Surface Laptop SE is Intel’s Celeron N4020/N4120. It ships with either 4/8GB of RAM and 64/128GB of eMMC storage. For video calling, there is a small 1-megapixel front-facing camera that has 720P support. Other specifications include single USB-C and USB-A ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a regular DC connector.
It’s surprising that Microsoft isn’t shipping this Surface laptop with its proprietary magnetic charging port. The company has repairability for these laptops easy with standard screws that can be easily removed to replace the battery, display, keyboard and more.
The company says it will be shipping these new devices to the US, UK, Canada and Japanese markets in early 2022. Its higher models with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage would cost $329.
