Tesla Inc sold a total of 11,095 Model 3 cars in May 2020 according to China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This figure is nearly three times more than the 3,635 units that the company had sold in April 2020.
As further proof that the Chinese economy is emerging from the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic, its tech industry is returning to normalcy. We had reported last month that smartphone sales were going back to normal already.
Now, the CPCA has reported that Tesla’s car sales are also returning to the pinnacle if not surpassing it. The US electric car maker had just opened its Shanghai factory in December 2019 and started producing Model 3 vehicles.
In March 2020, Tesla had sold 10,160 units of the Model 3; but the number had dropped drastically by the end of April. Clearly, the pandemic ravaging the world at the time had been the major cause of this drop. At the time, China had been the epicenter of the virus that had begun spreading from one of its province, Wuhan.

The country has now managed to stem the spread of the virus and we are seeing the effects of its marketing activities coming back to full power.
However, according to Reuters, that broke the news, Tesla has not made any comment on CPCA’s report concerning how many cars it sold in May 2020. Also, it is important to note that Tesla uses a counting system that is different from CPCA’s.
For example, Tesla reveals that it only counts a car as delivered (or sold) if it has been transferred to a customer and all the paperwork is complete. The company had had an impressive year in 2019, delivering 367,500 vehicles.
Tesla’s recent sales achievement has also seen its stock (TSLA) rise to $933.44, a new record high for the company.
