Tesla Delivers First Electric Semi Trucks To PepsiCo

Tesla has delivered the first set of its electric Semi trucks late on Thursday to representatives of PepsiCo, who reserved a 100 of them.

Tesla Semi trucks have been anticipated since 2017 after the company first announced it. At the time, there had been doubts about it ever becoming a reality from notable tech figures, including Bill Gates.

At the time, the Microsoft co-founder had said, “…the problem is that batteries are big and heavy. The more weight you’re trying to move, the more batteries you need to power the vehicle. Even with big breakthroughs in battery technology, electric vehicles will probably never be a practical solution for things like 18-wheelers, cargo ships, and passenger jets.”

The trucks may have been delayed from its previous 2019 date by almost three years but it has finally arrived. And, it appears that Gates needed not worry about its weight or how far it can travel as the company said that the trucks can accelerate 0-60mph in 20 seconds, and has a battery range of up to 500 miles.

Besides PepsiCo, there are other businesses in the supply industry like Walmart and FedEx that have already reserved some units as well.

The Verge says that the vehicles are currently priced at $150,000 and quoted the company’s CEO as touting the trucks as the most efficient, most desirable, and most driveable truck on the road. It is built to prevent jackknifing thanks to its traction control which also helps with regenerative braking for better battery efficiency and an automatic clutch for seamless highway driving.

The trucks have been proven to be able to complete a 500-mile trip on a full load of 81,000 pounds of cargo between Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, to San Diego on a single charge.

With all the positivity about the Tesla Semi trucks delivery, there are still some challenges in its foreseeable future. Besides the competition it faces from other electric truck makers and the growing hydrogen engine alternative, its weight restrictions, charging stations and general electrical needs may also block its wider adoption, for now.
