Tesla Cuts Warranty For Used Vehicles After Changing Refund Policy
Tesla has cut its used car warranty as it prepares for a crucial third-quarter financial report. The new policy means that a used Tesla made in 2016 or before will have less warranty protection.
Electrek reports that the electric automaker previously offered a two to a four-year warranty on used Tesla Model S and X vehicles. Now, it is offering a warranty of only one year or 10,000 miles over the original policy.
The new warranty policy reads; “Tesla used vehicles are covered by the remainder of 4 years or 50,000 miles left on the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty. After expiration, the Used Vehicle Limited Warranty provides additional coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles. If the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty has already expired, the Used Vehicle Limited Warranty will provide coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles, starting from your delivery date.”

Tesla doesn’t state a reason for the change in its used car warranty policy. However, Elecktrek notes that it will likely diminish customer confidence in buying a used car from the automaker. The company recently dissolved its public relations department, thus, making press inquiries more difficult.
Tesla also canceled an audacious return policy that meant new buyers of its electric vehicles could return them ad get a full refund within seven days.
The company had announced delivering 139,300 vehicles during the third quarter of 2020. This betters its previous record for deliveries, of 112,000 cars. It also marks the third consecutive quarter of Tesla bettering its delivery numbers.
