Tesla, in a blog post, said that it would be removing the ultrasonic sensor (USS) features in its car design, resigning drivers to only camera assistance.

The electric car maker says that this move is to solidify its reliance on Tesla Vision, a camera-based autopilot system that it is pioneering. By contrast, the auto driving industry has seem many companies rely on a mixture of LIDAR, radar, and cameras for better assistance.

“Today, we are taking the next step in Tesla Vision by removing ultrasonic sensors (USS) from Model 3 and Model Y. We will continue this rollout with Model 3 and Model Y, globally, over the next few months, followed by Model S and Model X in 2023,” the company’s statement further read.

To replace the outgoing sensors, Tesla is launching the ‘vision-based occupancy network.’ It claims that the new tech would give its autopilot better spatial positioning, longer range visibility, and the ability to identify and differentiate between objects.

However, new vehicles shipped without the USS support will not have the usual features, such as park assist, autopark, summon, and smart summon. Tesla says that this is just for a short period to allow for a complete or satisfactory transition.

“In the near future, once these features achieve performance parity to today’s vehicles, they will be restored via a series of over-the-air software updates. All other available Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capability features will be active at delivery, depending on order configuration,” it added.
