Tesla workers in New York have written a letter to CEO Elon Musk about their intention to form a union. According to a report by Bloomberg, the workers who signed the letter are those in charge of the company’s autopilot technology.

In the letter, the workers made demands like job security, better pay, and a more wholesome work environment.

Reports claim that the pressures at the Tesla Buffalo factory are so intense that many have to skip bathroom breaks because the company monitors their keystrokes to determine how long they spend on tasks and how much time they spend working.

The workers also said that the company does not support them raising concerns about work internally and it shut down an employee chatroom that was created for that specific purpose.

The discontent Tesla employees are getting support from Service Employees International Union affiliate Workers United. This union has a good track record and famously helped Starbucks café workers unionise in the US.

An Engagdget take on the story sheds light on Elon Musk’s history of opposing unions. Over the years, the billionaire has attempted to discourage workers from forming unions or joining one. He once even made a thinly veiled threat that workers who unionise will lose their stock options.

For now, Musk has not responded openly to the letter. However, his previous reactions have shown that he has faith in more Tesla workers choosing not to unionise because of the benefits they enjoy. He also has the option of meeting the demands in the letter half-way.
