Front-line Nigerian director Kunle Afolayan has announced his company’s upcoming film, “Citation”, which features his brother Gbenga Afolayan and Temi Otedola, daughter of billionaire Femi Otedola.

This is the first time Gabriel Afolayan will star in any of his brother’s films. Speaking at a world press conference addressed by his director brother to reveal the cast and collaborators, he said:

“There is no film Kunle shoots that he doesn’t give me the script to go through. So, it’s not true that we don’t work together. I just work more behind the scenes.”

Afolayan addressed the media on Thursday at a press conference to unveil the journey of yet another creative endeavour in his nearly two-decade career. He said his company is set for five weeks of shooting. It will begin on 10th January 2020 to 15th February 2020 in three countries.

“Citation” is packed with characters both familiar to fans and new to the franchise. It features a number of Nollywood heavyweights including Joke Silva, Ini Edo, Sadiq Daba, Gabriel Afolayan, Jimmy Jean Louis and Yomi Fash Lanso. Popular Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang also features in the film.

Afolayan also said he will soon surprise fans and unveil a top personality as part of the cast.

Speaking further on the theme of the film, the filmmaker said, “‘Citation’ will create awareness on the different forms of violence against women and girls in the public and private sphere.” In order to fulfil this, he continued, “I don’t just look out for popular faces or people with a million followers on Instagram. I look out for talent.”

Written by the company’s long-standing screenwriter, Tunde Babalola, “Citation” tells the story of Moremi Oluwa. She is a fun-loving 21-year-old postgraduate student on campus in Nigeria.

Exploring a subject of social decadence in the educational sector, the college drama centres on Moremi who has to find a way of dealing with the awkward situation of s*xual harassment from a lecturer. It will educate the society on women’s rights and the ways to enforce these rights for the achievement of equality and tranquillity. The film will also encourage and embolden women to stand up against mistreatment and abuse by a patriarchal society.

Incensed at the ill-treatment from a trendy university don, Lucien N’Dyare, she drags him before the University Senate. The ensuing intrigues define Moremi’s word against that of the respected academic, in a male-dominated bastion.

Afolayan’s company partners with Ford Foundation on the project designed to propel women to aspire to become successful leaders by providing counterexamples to negative gender stereotypes.

Kunle Afolayan disclosed that his crew will shoot “Citation” with the new Canon EOS C500 MarK II camera. This is the first time anyone will use the camera in Africa. Canon Central and North Africa were also an integral part of the production of his down-to-earth “Mokalik”.

Other partners, according to Afolayan, include Access Bank, through its W Initiative – Africa’s premier women’s financial programme focusing on inspiring, connecting and empowering women and girls; online travel portal, Flyboku, for flights and related logistics; Ajike Peoples’ Support Centre, a Non-Governmental Organisation and pet project of Mrs.
