The Teletubbies’ Sun Baby is all grown up after finding fame on the children’s TV show. The children’s tv show turns 22 this year, and the memories are timeless. If you are older than 20, then chances are that this sounds familiar to you.

However, if you’re scratching your head over what this means, then that’s A-okay. Teletubbies was a show that aired all over the world in the late ’90s and early ’00s. Whenever the sun came up, the Teletubbies came out to play. The interesting fact was that the sun was a giggling adorable baby. Whenever she giggled, you couldn’t help but smile or giggle too.

That baby sun was the sun of Teletubbyland. It shone so bright and caused many happy hearts. The baby sun was always excited during magical moments or when the Teletubbies did something silly. Jess Smith was the baby sun and was only nine months when she shot the scene.

How it was shot

She explained that her dad, Bill, 51, made her laugh by playing with a teddy bear behind the camera. Meanwhile, she was sat on a high chair while the camera was down. She had to look down just like a sun would. That explains a whole lot, right?

She became one of the most famous faces on TV without even realising it — what do baby’s know right? Fast-forward to 22 years later and that sun baby is not a baby anymore. She is older but still has that cheeky smile.

Over the years, there had been many people claiming to be the sun baby. However, Jess Smith revealed the truth six years ago, in late 2014. She was 19 the first time she revealed it to her Canterbury Christ Church university friends.

They had been playing a game where everyone had to tell the group something which they’d never have guessed about each other. That was when she said the impressive secret.

Then she went on Facebook to confirm it.

Her 2014 social media post reads:

“So I’ve recently celebrated my 19th birthday and after a lot of thought, I’ve decided it’s time to tell everyone. I used to hide it but after a lot of encouragement from my friends at university, I’ve gained the confidence to come out with it.

“I am the sun from Teletubbies. There have been quite a few people pretending to be ‘the sun’ but only I could tell you the real story.”

She revealed she was the giggling baby girl in the hit children’s show. At the time the show premiered on television, she was already two years old. Now she is rocking the two-digits, 24 years.

How it all happened

Ragdoll productions had asked Edenbridge Hospital to help them find a smiley baby. This was way back in 1996, and Jess’s mom, Anji Smith, had gone to weigh her daughter. A health visitor had spotted her and then put her name forward.

Mrs Smith disclosed she had no idea it would be as big of a deal as it became:

“It was just something a bit different to do, and we didn’t expect it to be as big as it was. They just sat her in front of a camera and she just laughed and smiled at her dad.

“We didn’t hear anything until we got a letter when she was 18 months old saying she’d been picked. It was really weird seeing her on television.”

At the time Jess was paid just £250 and given a box of toys to take home. Meanwhile, in 2016, her replacement was unveiled.
