TBT: 20 Of The Best Love Songs From The Lost Age Of Soulful RnB

There’s no denying that the 90s was the golden age of Hip hop and RnB music.

Missy Elliot, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Dru Hill, Whitney Houston, TLC, Zhane, Color Me Badd, Aaliyah, The Fugees, and other talented artists saw to the rise of the genre, popularising it with upbeat and slow anthems that made listeners shuffle and also, put them in their feelings.

Other artists from all echelons and sub-genres including music heavyweights, Micheal and Janet Jackson moved in swiftly on RnB as it continued to blossom.

But one branch of Rnb that really stood out was the 90s love song.

These songs were worded with such lyrical aptness, every line brought back memories of the love you once had, the one you’ve and the one you’re yet to find.

Though blended in an amalgamation of influences from rock and hip-hop, it owned its identity; lyrically and musically.

Bending heavily towards ballad, these songs were made with less bass and pump and more acoustic stirrings of the guitar and piano, giving them just the right amount of love and soul.

Music television channels, especially MTV and Chanell O favored balladry and romanticism in songs at that time.
