Ever since Beyoncé dropped the mind-blowing “The Lion King: The Gift” a few months ago, countless artists have made covers of her songs. The Wizkid-assisted “Brown Skin Girl” emerged as a fan favourite, inviting an array of covers and refixes, from the likes of Simi, Johnny Drille, and now, a little late to the party, Stormzy.
Stormzy, a regular on BBC 1 Radio’s Live Lounge, delivered a beautiful cover of Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl“. He began with raw vocals like Blue Ivy on the original track. Stormzy then rolls into a beautiful freestyle. Staying true to the song’s message, he exalts the beauty of the black woman.
Following this captivating first verse, Stormzy leaves the rest of the song to the live band, the choir and Stalk Ashley, who comes in singing Beyoncé’s verse on the song. Each component ties in perfectly, making this performance a notable one. The combination ends up sounding like a soulful hat-tip to Black church music.
