“Squid Game” Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk Says He’s Not Rich Despite The Show’s Success On Netflix

Going from the staggering success of Netflix’s “Squid Game”, one would think its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is swimming in money.

Hwang Dong-hyuk created the story in 2009 while living with his mum and grandmum.

Well, Dong-hyuk may be swimming but definitely not in money. He told The Guardian during an interview that he was not nearly as rich as the hyper-violent dystopian show’s protagonist and gambling addict Seong Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-Jae), who took home 4.6 billion ($36 million) at the end of the deadly game

“I’m not that rich,” he said. “But I do have enough. I have enough to put food on the table. And it’s not like Netflix is paying me a bonus.”

“Netflix paid me according to the original contract,” the 50-year-old said.

According to reports, over 142 million households have watched “Squid Game”. Leaked documents obtained by Bloomberg showed that Netflix estimates the show could generate around $900 million. However, it only cost just about $21.4 million to produce the entire series.

However, Hwang Dong-hyuk, who lost six teeth while filming is not getting any extra pay.

“It was physically, mentally and emotionally draining. I kept having new ideas and revising the episodes as we were filming so the amount of work multiplied.”

He joked that he may have to make a season 2 to be as rich as the winner of “Squid Game” but he’s not too sure yet because making 1 was extremely stressful

“I don’t have well-developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

Squid Game, despite spending less than two months on Netflix has had a massive impact on pop culture and is expected to inspire several costumes in the incoming Halloween.
