Sony And OmniVison Receives Authorisation To Sell Camera Tech To Huawei

The Trump administration has granted Sony and OmniVision a license that allows them continue to sell camera tech to Huawei despite the ban on the phone company.

OmniVision Technologies is a leading image sensor manufacturer of CMOS, BSI and FSI image. Additionally, Sony is a big name in small and high-performance image sensor. It is advancing developments in the high sensitivity back-illuminated CMOS image sensor and the stacked CMOS image sensor.

Huawei will likely enjoy this news as it means that it will not have to start sourcing for its own camera sensor tech in-house. Which is the case for many of the technology that it needs for its smartphones. For example, its chip making business took a hit in 2020 after the US extended a ban that blocked companies from selling necessary parts to it.

According to an Android Authority report, Samsung display business unit also received a license recently that allows it sell vital tech to Huawei. This is another good news as both improved camera performance and display are key features of flagship devices.

However, SK Hynix is still blocked from doing business with Huawei. These several bans are beginning to take their toll on the Chinese smartphone maker. At the end of Q3 2020, the company dropped to second on the list of highest selling smartphone in the world.

Also, it had announced that it is running out of processor chips for its smartphones. Its lack of Google services is making it less popular in markets outside China as well. Huawei now retains Sony and OmniVision as customers and will be looking to increase its clientele.
