Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Chip, Qualcomm’s 2022 Android Flagship Processors

Android chip maker Qualcomm has announced its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 latest flagship processor for the year 2022. The announcement was made during the company’s annual Snapdragon Tech Summit.

This latest flagship chip will be succeeding the Snapdragon 888, as Qualcomm will no longer be using its triple style snapdragon chip branding. It is simplifying its chip Snapdragon naming scheme, as it rebrands for the future.

Qualcomm recently hinted at the change with the recent naming of its Snapdragon 888 plus badge. There was no mention of “Qualcomm” for the name, also Snapdragon is now a separate entity on its own the company announced.

According to the company, the chip brings massive improvements in camera technology, performance, 5G, security and Artificial intelligence. This chip will be powering the most powerful smartphones of 2022.

Performance-wise, Qualcomm is promising that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 offers up to 20 per cent better performance and up to 30 percent more efficient than the previous model.

For the camera improvements, Qualcomm is using its “Snapdragon Sight” brand for this chip. They are capable of shooting 8K video with HDR 10 Plus, surprisingly on 18-bit RAW.

Debuting is better AI processing with better autofocus, exposure and face detection technology. This new chip has a dedicated “bokeh” engine for portrait effects on 4K video. It can also capture better dark mode pictures from six images in the 888 chip to 30 in the Gen 1.

For Connectivity, this new chip supports Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth LE Audio, and Qualcomm’s audio technology for AptX Lossless wireless.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 modem is making its way to this new chip. The fourth-generation modem adds support for up to 10Gbps speeds and 3GPP Release 16 specification. This also supports the already existing mmWave and sub-6GHz compatibility.

While for security, the 8 Gen 1 chip has a new hardware layer of protection with a “dedicated Trust Management Engine” with support for driver’s licenses, IDs, digital car keys and e-money wallets.

Conclusively, this new chip has Qualcomm’s latest Hexagon processor with a seventh-generation AI engine. The chip company claims it will deliver four times more processing speeds than its predecessor and up to 1.7 times power efficiency.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip will be using the 4nm process, making a jump from the 5nm process the Snapdragon 888 uses. Also, the 8 Gen 1 chip will be Qualcomm’s first chip to use the Armv9 architecture from Arm.
