Snap has revealed that its TikTok competitor, Spotlight, had reached 100 million users in January 2021. This could mean that just two months after its launch, the feature is enjoying a successful debut.
Snap’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, revealed the figures on a call with investors to discuss the company’s Q4 2020 earnings. The company is throwing a lot of money behind Spotlight in order to help the section gain success.
The company promised to give $1 million per day to creators for more than a month to get them to post videos, filling the service with lots of content. The initiative is seemingly working. Some creators see the service as a quick way to make a lot of money. Creators now average about 175,000 videos per day, according to Spiegel in his prepared remarks.

“While it is still very early in the development of this new content platform, we are highly encouraged by the initial results and excited about the potential for Spotlight to further expand our monetization opportunity in the future,” Snap CFO Derek Andersen said at the call with investors.
Spiegel says that the company can now focus on optimizing the services recommendation system as it now has lots of content. At some point, the company will introduce ads but for now, it says it has its “focus on growing engagement”.
Rival TikTok still leads Spotlight in the number of users. It revealed in June 2020 that it had 100 million users and its increasing popularity also suggests that the number has increased by a lot since.
