Grammy Award-nominated singer, Akon is set to launch his own cryptocurrency and he is calling it Akoin. The superstar is also building a “futuristic cryptocurrency themed city” simply called Akon City.

Akon City will soon commence construction and its currency will exclusively be the Akoin cryptocurrency. The city will have roads, a hospital, a mall, hotels, and a school. There will also be parks, universities, a stadium, and an industrial complex.

Phase one of the city will be completed in 2023 and is valued at a whopping $6 billion. Phase 2 of Akon City will also run from 2024 to 2029. In the end, it will be a complete cryptocurrency city running exclusively on Akoin cryptocurrency.

The construction contract which spans 2,000 acres has been awarded to KE International, a US-based engineering firm. KE International has secured $4 billion from investors for the first and second phases of the project. Dubai based Bakri & Associates Development Consultants will also lead the architectural designs of Akon City under the guidance of KE International.

Akon told Bloomberg that he came up with the idea after being unable to convert his Senegalese money during a trip to France. The artist and philanthropist said he then realised that the CFA francs, which serve as legal tender for most French-speaking West African countries have next to no use outside the region.

“It really just opened my eyes. That really catapulted the energy to say We have to have our own currency. I don’t care what it takes — we’re going to fix this,” Akon told Bloomberg.

He announced his plans for Akon City in 2019. Early in 2020, he then made a land agreement with the Senegalese government. Akoin co-founder and President, Jon Karas, however, says that the Senegalese government isn’t providing funding for the project and has no stake in the coin. The superstar then tweeted a peek into what the city might look like.

Akon City will be located close to a small coastal village in the west of Senegal called Mbodième. Mbodième is less than an hour’s drive from the new Blaise Diagne International Airport in, Senegal’s capital, Dakar.

Akoin cryptocurrency will be the legal tender in Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC). MMTC is a green city in Western Kenya, which KE International is also constructing. The construction project began in 2014 and is now about 85% done and should reach full completion in December 2020.
