Signal Sees Meteoric Rise In Number As Users Leave WhatsApp

Messaging app, Signal says it’s seeing a rise in the number of its new users, so much so that the rise is causing delays in phone number verifications of new accounts across multiple cell providers. The rise is most likely as a result of rival WhatsApps new privacy policy.

The new privacy policy states that WhatsApp will now share WhatsApp user information with other Facebook companies.

“As part of the Facebook family of companies, WhatsApp receives information from and shares information with, this family of companies. We may use the information we receive from them, and they may use the information we share with them, to help operate, provide, improve, understand, customize, support, and market our Services and their offerings,” the new privacy policy says.

The app also gained the support of the world’s richest man Elon Musk who urged his follower to switch to Signal following WhatsApp’s new privacy policy.

Although Musk didn’t mention Facebook or WhatsApp, it’s highly unlikely that it’s pure coincidence. The Tesla CEO has never hidden his criticism for Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg. He also tweeted a meme criticizing Facebook for its role in helping members of the mob that stormed the US Capitol organize online.

Signal has fixed the verification issues and says everyone can register again. “Everyone should be able to register without delay again. Thanks to all of the carriers who flipped the right switches so that people can keep switching,” Signal tweeted.
