Just say “Shazam!”, and film lovers start lining up to the cinemas.

With estimated ticket sales of $159 million in its opening weekend, Warner Bros.’ Shazam! showed that film fans around the world can enjoy a lighter spin on the usual dark superhero tale.

The family-friendly flick stars young Asher Angel as Billy Baston, an unhappy foster kid. Baston transforms into a muscular, wise-cracking adult superhero (Zachary Levi) when anyone pronounces the secret word. Both the film’s reviews and audience responses have been strongly positive, according to Hollywood Reporter.

At the end of the three-day opening weekend, the film’s take-home was not bad at all. Shazam! made $57 million in the North American box office over the weekend. Add that to the $102 million made so far from overseas ticket sales. $159 million is already a very profitable return on the $80 million Warner and New Line spent to make the film. And this is only the beginning.
