Shatu Garko In Trouble With Kano Hisbah After Win At Miss Nigeria

Kano State Hisbah commander Haruna Ibn Sina says parents of Shatu Garko may be arrested for allowing their daughter participate in the 2021 Miss Nigeria beauty pageant.

Ibn describes the act as “illegal” and contrary to Islamic beliefs.

Shatu Garko recently emerged as the first Muslim to win the Miss Nigeria pageant since its inception in 1957.

18 years old Garko, is a Hijab model who hails from Kano State. She became the 44th Miss Nigeria after beating 17 other finalists on Friday, December 17, 2022, in Lagos.

Garko went home with ₦10m, a one-year residency at a luxury apartment, a brand new car and brand ambassadorship opportunities.

Shatu Garko had earlier stated that she loves riding horses and is passionate about proving that religion and culture are not barriers to following one’s dreams.

Meanwhile, in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Mr Ibn said participating in a pageant is “forbidden” for Muslims from Kano. This is because Kano is a northern Nigerian state with strict Sharia practices.

He also said they had confirmed that Ms Garko’s parents are living in Kano and will soon be brought into custody and interrogated for the role their daughter played in the beauty contest.

Though Miss Garko participated in the pageant adorning her hijab, the Hisbah commander said the exercise was against Quranic instruction.
