Seun Kuti Says He Used To Smoke With His Mum As A Teen

Top Nigerian singer Seun Kuti recently travelled down memory lane to the time he used to smoke weed with his mum in his room because she was hiding from his grandmother.

The music star made the revelation during a chat with On-Air personality, Moet Abebe and her sister, Nicole.

“My mum was smoking till she had me. Even when I started smoking, we used to smoke together. And the funniest times were when her mom comes to stay with us and she didn’t know her daughter smokes.

So my mum has to run to my room to hide and smoke weed with me. So we were both smoking in my room hiding from her mom. So I’d tell her go deal with your mum, my mum knows I smoke. My grandma is old school so my mum couldn’t tell her.”

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of the music legend and Nigeria’s biggest music export, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He was born on 11th January 1983.

While Fela was still alive, Seun was always with him. This marked his first step to being a prodigy. His music career started when he was very young, as he began singing for his father’s band, Egypt 80, at the tender age of nine.

He would open shows for the band, singing a select group of songs with Egypt 80 before his dad took the stage.

Seun was also a developing saxophonist and percussionist. Then he entered the formal ranks of the band before he was 12.

After Fela died in 1997, Seun Kuti, only 14 years old, took over the leadership of the band. He has since led it to quite a number of its tours worldwide.

He was nominated for the 2019 Grammys for the “World Album” category but lost to the Soweto Gospel Choir.
