Many people want a fast computer but not many know how to check the speed of their computers. There’s also a school of thought that thinks just the RAM determines the speed of their computer and they are wrong.

A computer is a sum of different parts and each part can delay its collective speed if it’s not functioning optimally. The following parts (hardware and software) are the most critical in determining the speed of a computer;

The Cache

The Cache is an important aspect of computer speed, as the computer uses Cache to transfer data between its CPU, memory, and other components within the computer. The cache is the fastest type of memory inside a computer and the more cache space a computer has, the more it runs more efficiently.

Bus Speed

The bus connects the different parts of the motherboard. The more data the bus can handle at one time will determine if the information will travel faster. It is measured in megahertz (MHz), most computers nowadays have their Bus speeds in Gigahertz (GHz).

The RAM

The RAM (Random Access Memory) is the computer’s short-term data storage. It stores all the data your computer is actively using and helps you access data quickly. If you run multiple programs at once, it is recommended you use a higher RAM.

The Hard Drive

Yes, hard drives have an impact on your computer speed. The drive stores your information, applications, and documents. A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has spinning disks on which the information is stored and can be fast or faster depending on its Revolutions Per Minute (RPM). The higher the RPM of your hard drive, the faster it is.

To check the RPM of your hard disk drive:

— visit your Device properties

— expand the tab under disk drives

— copy the serial number of the drive

— Google the serial number and check the RPM

If your PC uses a solid-state drive (SSD), it should be faster in this regard. This is because SSD has no moving parts or rotating discs but instead uses flash memory, which means it reads and writes faster than the traditional HDD.

The Operating System

The latest operating system helps to increase the speed of a PC. This is because the processes are optimised to get the best of each hardware part. These are usually improved upon with each update, so you should take updates seriously.
