Samsung Unveils New Chipsets To Improve Its 5G RAN Solutions

Samsung has introduced a new set of chipsets which will be implemented in the company’s 5G devices. The new 3GPP Rel.16 compliant chipsets incorporate a Digital Front End (DFE)-RFIC integrated chip, a second-generation 5G modem System-on-Chip (SoC), as well as a third-generation mmWave Radio Frequency Integrated Circut (RFIC) chip.

Moor Insights & Strategy, Anshel Sag said:

5G chipsets are critical to achieving the performance capabilities required for next-generation network deployments. Samsung’s long-standing expertise in developing chipsets in-house is a key differentiator, positioning it as a leader in the delivery of 5G network solutions with the features and benefits operators seek to advance their 5G strategies.

DFE-FRIC Integrated Chip merges DFE and RFIC features for mmWave and below-6GHz spectrums. This integration enables it to enhance output power, reduce the size, and double frequency bandwidth for the tech giant’s 5G solutions such as 5G Compact macro.

2nd Generation 5G Modem SoC will make it possible for the baseband unit to have more capacity; as well as lesser power consumption per cell. It will also support mmWave and below-6GHz spectrums to provide enhanced power efficiency and beamforming for Massive MIMO radio and 5G Compact Macro. 3rd Generation mmWave RFIC chip will be used in 5G Compact Macro and supports 39GHz and 28GHz spectrums. It also enables the production of compact 5G radio by enhancing power consumption.

Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, Junehee Lee stated:

This newly unveiled chipset is the fundamental component of our state-of-art 5G solutions; developed through a long-standing R&D effort; that enables Samsung to be at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge 5G technologies. As one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world; we are committed to developing the most innovative chips for the next phase of 5G advancement; integrated with the features mobile operators seek to stay competitive.

Samsung announced the launch of these chipsets at the virtual public event, Samsung Networks: Redefined. These chipsets will power 5G Compact Macro, Massive MIMO radios, as well as baseband units. These products will be available for purchase in 2022.
