Samsung says hackers stole customers data in the US

Samsung confirms that hacker(s) stole customers data that could include names, contact, demographic information, dates of birth and product registration details.

The company released a statement on Friday, September 2, to inform customers. However, it added that it had secured the hacked systems and its security team is working with an external cybersecurity company as well as the authorities to catch the culprit(s).

While it did not give a figure of how many people the breach affected, it says it was reaching out to them.

“We want to assure our customers that the issue did not impact Social Security numbers or credit and debit card numbers, but in some cases, may have affected information such as name, contact and demographic information, date of birth, and product registration information. The information affected for each relevant customer may vary,” Samsung said.

The South Korean electronics giant claimed that the breach occurred in late July 2022. It could have been a hacking campaign as it referred to the bad actor(s) as ‘third party’. The company launched an investigation and later determined the consequences of the breach by August 4.

It said that it regrets the inconvenience and invites customers to take actions like demanding for their credit report, remaining cautious of unsolicited communications requesting additional personal info, ignoring attachments from suspicious emails, and reviewing their accounts for suspicious activities.

“Based on our ongoing investigation, there is no immediate action necessary for any of Samsung’s platforms,” the company’s statement further read.
