How Samsung 200MP image sensor improves smartphone photography

Samsung has announced a 200MP image sensor that will improve smartphone photography; here is what you need to know.

The sensor is called ISOCELL HP3, and it is bringing the smallest pixel in the industry; 0.56-micrometer pixels. Its capability allows it to pack 200 million pixels in a 1/1.4-inch optical format. This is the measurement of the diameter of the captured area.

Basically, the sensor can reduce camera module area by 20 per cent, allowing smartphone makers to keep their high-end devices slim and pocket-friendly.

In addition, it brings a Super QPD auto-focusing mechanism that ensures that all pixels have auto-focusing capabilities. Also, this solution uses one lens over four-adjacent pixels to identify the phase differences in both horizontal and vertical directions. What this means for users is that they get more accurate and quick autofocus when trying to capture images.

ISOCELL HP3 supports 8K videos in 30fps and 4K videos in 120fps.

Another feature that the sensor brings is its ultimate low-light tech which combines four pixels into one to turn the 0.56μm 200MP sensor into a 1.12μm 50MP sensor. Conversely, it can combine 16 pixels into one to turn itself into a 2.24μm 12.5MP sensor. This feature allows it stimulates a large-sized pixel sensor to get brighter results when shooting in dim environments or at night.

The ISOCELL HP3 has a Smart-ISO Pro feature that can combine image information made from the two conversion gains of Low and High ISO mode to create HDR images.

In its case, the new Samsung 200MP sensor has a triple ISO mode (to serve low, mid, and high modes) and allows it to show images in more than 4 trillion colours. Since it is designed to be ‘smart,’ the tech can automatically switch between solutions to get the best result for the shooting environment.

Speaking about the tech, JoonSeo Yim, Executive Vice President of Sensor Business Team at Samsung Electronics, said:

“Samsung has continuously led the image sensor market trend through its technology leadership in high resolution sensors with the smallest pixels.

“With our latest and upgraded 0.56μm 200MP ISOCELL HP3, Samsung will push on to deliver epic resolutions beyond professional levels for smartphone camera users.”
