Rivian recalls more than 12,000 EVs again, this time due to possible steering issue

Electric car maker Rivian recalls over 12,000 vehicles it shipped because of a possible flaw that could affect their steering wheels. The exact number of vehicles being recalled is 12,212 and it represents a large percentage of the cars it has delivered so far in 2022.

The flaw affects the company’s product lineup from its pickups, to SUVs and even vans. So far, Rivian has produced 14,317 vehicles in 2022, according to a report by The Verge.

In a notice to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the company explained that the recall was due to a problem with potential to cause loss of vehicle control and lead to a crash. It said that the fastener connecting the front upper control arms and steering knuckles of affected vehicles may not be well torqued, which could lead to separation.

To identify vehicles with the issue, Rivian said that owners may have noticed excess noise as well as vibration and harshness in their vehicle’s front suspension. They could have also see decline in their steering performance and overall feel.

“It’s important not to minimize the potential risks involved and why we are volunteering to conduct this recall. In rare circumstances, the nut could loosen fully. I want to reiterate that this is extremely rare, but it does reinforce why we are acting with such urgency and caution,” Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe wrote in an email to customers.

This marks the second time that the car maker is recalling vehicles this year. And neither of the issues had called any serious damage to life or property before it was spotted and fixed.

While EVs have been subject to recalls quite frequently, it is more of a plus for the industry, than a disadvantage. It allows companies to fix errors in a wide range of products before they cause any harm.
