Reddit Shuts Down Clubhouse Copy Reddit Talk, To Focus On New Features

Summary:

  • Reddit is shutting down its Clubhouse clone, Reddit Talk, and shifting its focus to keep up with trends like TikTok.
  • The company has introduced new features, including a comment search function, improved subreddit search and the option to choose between text and video content feeds.
  • Reddit is aiming to attract more users by building products that are familiar to those on other platforms.

Reddit has announced that it is shutting down Reddit Talk, a clone of Clubhouse that allows strangers to converse via audio, and it seems the company is shifting its focus to catchup with TikTok and others.

During the pandemic, with many people sheltered in place, it became important to connect with other people in a way different from reply to posts on the TL. Clubhouse blew up and many social media companies started building clones.

It was around this time that Twitter conceived the idea of Spaces and Reddit Talk was launched in April 2021. However, it seems like there is not much going on in the live audio chat space anymore and everyone wants to move on.

Reddit, which has always appeared to be in a world of its own, is trying to change that by keeping up with what is popular. With 500 million monthly users, the company believes that it can attract more people if it builds products that they are familiar with on other platforms.

Reddit announced a feature that lets users search for comments within a post on its desktop, iOS and Android instances. It added that it improved its subreddit search algorithm to show more relevant subreddits for most searches.

Also, the company announced a feature that separates text and video content with feed options to choose “Read” and “Watch”. The feeds will surface posts from subscribed users and recommended ones.

“By focusing on the core tenets of Reddit, new and existing users coming to Reddit will be greeted by better experiences and options to discover new and interesting content and communities in uncluttered spaces,” the company’s chief product officer Pali Bhat had said.
