Qualcomm Collaborates With Microsoft On Custom Chips For AR Glasses

Qualcomm has announced it is collaborating with Microsoft to build a custom Snapdragon chip for its AR glasses. The next-gen Augmented reality news was announced at the CES 2022 keynote from Qualcomm.

“We’re announcing that we’re developing a custom augmented reality Snapdragon chip for next-generation, power-efficient, very lightweight AR glasses for the Microsoft ecosystem,” said CEO Cristiano Amon.

This partnership doesn’t come as a surprise; Qualcomm already supplies Microsoft with its Snapdragon 850 chip found in its HoloLens 2 headset. The chip company is improving this partnership by merging two different technologies.

“And we’re integrating into that chip platform software from both companies: the Microsoft Mesh platform, and the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces XR development platform.

Snapdragon Spaces will be fully integrated into Microsoft Mesh, and this platform will be also available for next-generation lightweight glasses” said Cristiano Amon.

Microsoft seems to be working on its own custom-built chip. A recent job opening for System-on-a-chip (SOC) architect at Microsoft’s Surface points to a custom made processor for its devices. Just like Apple’s M1 chips, Microsoft might be making its own processors.

While a job listing doesn’t confirm that Microsoft is building its own Chips; it, however, would be good for innovation if it actually does. We only speculate that an SoC silicon architect job listing is just the right step in that direction. In partnering with a leading chip maker Qualcomm; Microsoft will be able to integrate its technology and also run its next-gen AR glasses efficiently.
