Qualcomm Announces New Snapdragon Chips For Smartwatches

On Tuesday, 30th June 2020, Qualcomm said that it is launching Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100+ chips made to improve the performance of smartwatches. The new Wear OS processors will be Qualcomm’s most recent smartwatch update since its 2018 release, here are additional details about these chips below.

In announcing the new chips, Qualcomm labelled them the “next generation connected smartwatch platform based on [their] ultra-low power hybrid architecture”. The new processors are the Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100+.

They are upgrades for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100. The company said that the Snapdragon 4100+ will be 85% faster than its predecessor. Thus, it will have faster app launches, more responsive UX and richer photo and video experiences.

It will have an always-on (AON) co-processor that supports 64K colours. This processor will give smartwatches a continuous heart rate monitoring capability, faster tilt-to-wake responsiveness, steps, alarms, timers and haptics.

Also, it will allow any smartwatch running on the OS to use a 12nm low power process technology. This will give it a less than 25% power consumption and extended battery life. You can see a video of the launch of the chips here.

According to The Verge’s report, Qualcomm has already started supplying Wear 4100 and Wear 4100+ to companies that make smartwatch hardware. This means that smartwatches that use this new operating system will soon be available in a matter of months.

Google had started the Wear OS in 2014 and released a recent version of it, the Wear OS 2.18 in May 2020. While the Wear OS smartwatch industry has big names like Samsung, LG, Asus, Fossil, Qualcomm and others; Google has tried to break into the market unsuccessfully.

Its latest foray is its bid to buy Fitbit. While its application to buy the company is pending, others can take advantage of the new Qualcomm chips to make high-end smartwatches.
