President Muhammadu Buhari Makes Bold Statement On Poverty

In the first Democracy Day Celebration speech on Wednesday, 12th June 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari made a bold declaration on poverty. He delivered the speech at the Eagle Square in Abuja in which he stated that as much as 100 million Nigerians can be lifted out of poverty in 10 years.

 

He also stated that if countries such as China, Indonesia and India have been able to succeed in doing this, then Nigeria can do the same with purposeful leadership.

 

“This task is by no means unattainable. China has done it. India has done it. Indonesia has done it. Nigeria can do it.”

 

In addition, he said, “These are all countries characterised by huge burdens of population. China and Indonesia succeeded under authoritarian regimes. India succeeded in a democratic setting. We can do it.”

 

“With leadership and sense of purpose, we can lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years,” he said.

He also promised to integrate rural economies to the national economic grid and support domestic production of basic goods, while also reducing over-reliance on imported goods.

 

President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier signed the Public Holiday Amendment Bill into law on Monday, 10th June 2019. This was in accordance with his declaration of 12th June as the official National Democracy Day. Whereas, 29th May will become a Worker’s and handing-over day.

 

“By the act amended and signed by Mr President, 29th May is no more a public holiday. 12th June is now a public holiday and the country’s Democracy Day,” the president’s senior special assistant, Ita Enang, said.

 

Although 29th May has always been observed as a public holiday and Democracy Day, this new announcement was made on 6th June 2018. After the signing of the Bill into law, 2019 has now officially become the first year Democracy will be observed on 12th June.

Prior to the 12th June celebration, there was a Historical Exhibition in Arts, Pictures and Immersive Environment on 7th June. Also, 9th June marked the Youth Concert, Creative Industry and Entertainment Night at the International Conference Centre. While 11th June was a Secondary Schools Exhibition/Panel Discussion which featured three events: the PMB Oratorical Contest, an Anti-corruption Summit and First Lady’s Commissioning Programme in Yola.

 

The grand finale was on 12th June in which a parade held at the Eagle Square in Abuja. After this, the Democracy Day programme wrapped up with a Dinner and Gala Night at the State House.
