Opinion: Is The Nigerian Government Right To Put A Target On Bobrisky?

Last month, Bobrisky was in the news over some confusion on the bounty placed on the head of her terrorist namesake by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. Now, the Nigerian Barbie is being targeted for real, this time by the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe.

Runsewe has spoken out about Bobrisky’s way of life and, as it appears, he has some pretty bigoted views to share. In an interview with The Vanguard, Runsewe described Bobrisky as a national disgrace to the country.

According to him, if nothing is done to stop Bobrisky now, it may be too late when something is eventually done. It somehow can never be too late to stop Boko Haram, murderous herdsmen, corrupt politicians, land and air pollution, skyrocketing unemployment rates, our failing economy, child marriage and mortality, and internet fraudsters. To Runsewe, Bobrisky, who is just trying to chop life, is the real threat.

He said:

“Bobrisky is a national disgrace. He started by selling and using bleaching creams, now, he has grown b***s, bums, and hips. If a Bobrisky is doing well with his immoral lifestyle, how do you convince Nigerian youths to do the right thing? Bobrisky has the right, but not within the Nigerian environment.”

Runsewe acknowledged that Bobrisky has the right to live as she pleases. He stated, however, that she just couldn’t do it in Nigeria. This clearly states that Nigeria is not a safe space for its citizens in any way whatsoever. It means that Nigerians, who people like Runsewe see as ‘other’, would have to move elsewhere to survive. Read some more of his statements below.

He vows to attack Bobrisky…

“There are others like him, but they live outside the country. If we don’t address Bobrisky as early as possible, he will form a team that will spread like wildfire. This will result in a lot of suicide cases because the typical Nigerian parent would not want to see their child become a Bobrisky. It’s not an entertainment issue, it’s a war to save Nigeria for a better tomorrow. If you start this kind of war, you are bound to be attacked.”

“My job is to preserve and protect the culture of this country. It would be unfair for me to be silent on this. You now find male prostitutes by the roadsides. A popular Nigerian recently paid an unexpected visit to his son in England only to discover that the son is a gay leader. The man was brought back to the country on a wheelchair. I’m talking with the strength of information and authority.”

…and arrest other Nigerian transgenders:

“I have information that over twenty-three Nigerian boys are already starting Bobrisky’s brand. Immediately we started the war, they pulled out because we are going to get them arrested. They cannot destroy this country.”

Nigeria has a lot of issues that are pushing it to the verge of destruction. But this obviously aloof Director has decided to transfer the blame onto Bobrisky simply because she makes him uncomfortable.

This goes to show how quickly statements can be made and actions can be taken when it comes to the petty wishes of politicians. It shows how slow they can be when it pertains to the life and the livelihoods of Nigerians everywhere. The true tragedy is what Runsewe places his priorities on, not Bobrisky’s harmless life decisions.

Runsewe needs to either calm down or stay pressed. I hope Bobrisky keeps enjoying her life unbothered.
