OpenAI CEO Says ChatGPT Upgrade May Not Replace Google

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has clarified the details regarding the upcoming ChatGPT upgrade, GPT-4, saying that it may not be the Google search killer many people seem to hope it will be.

Altman, speaking with StrictlyVC, wanted people to tone down their expectations. “The GPT-4 rumor mill is a ridiculous thing. I don’t know where it all comes from. People are begging to be disappointed and they will be. The hype is just like… We don’t have an actual AGI and that’s sort of what’s expected of us,” he said.

Need to know: ACI (or artificial general intelligence) is a shorthand for an AI system with at least human-equivalent capabilities across many domains.

In addition, the OpenAI CEO claimed that the company is not making much money. And, he further commented on the discussions about AI bias, saying that users should ultimately be able to determine how they want the models to behave when it interacts with them but people making them should have more freedom.

“…people should be allowed very different things that they want their AI to do. If you want the super never-offend, safe-for-work model, you should get that, and if you want an edgier one that is creative and exploratory but says some stuff you might not be comfortable with, or some people might not be comfortable with, you should get that,” Altman said.

On plagiarism and education, he said that educators may have to adapt to text generation systems, the same way they adapted to calculators. Then, he added that ChatGPT could not end Google dominance because he expects the tech giant to adapt to compete with it.
