On-Demand Grocery Start-up Instacart Plan To Hire 300,000 New Workers

On-demand Grocery start-up, Instacart is trying to hire about 300,000 new workers. This to meet surging demand for groceries amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge is due to millions of people staying at home to limit the spread of coronavirus. The company is a San Francisco-based start-up that offers same-day grocery delivery.


The on-demand grocery firm says that it seeks to hire 300,000 “full-service shoppers”. The workers are to be independent contractors in North America for the next three months due to the surge in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.


“The last few weeks have been the busiest in Instacart’s history and our teams are working around the clock to reliably and safely serve all members of our community,” said Instacart founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta in a statement.


The hiring spree will more than double the amount of Instacart’s full-time shoppers. The start-up already has close to 12,000 in-store shoppers who are considered part-time employees.

Companies delivering essential items are experiencing a surge in demand at a time when many businesses are at the risk of bankruptcy as the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing most businesses shut.


Before Instacart took its decision, Amazon, as well as Walmart, recently shared plans on their intention to hire at least 100,000 new workers each to cope with increasing customer demand.


Instacart has said it needs the new workers for cities where it’s seeing the most customer demand. These places include California, New York, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Georgia, and Ohio. The start-up currently operates in 5,500 cities across North America.
