Nollywood Movies Won’t Be Submitted At The 2023 Oscars As Movies Did Not Meet Criteria

Nigeria has withdrawn from the competition for the 2023 Oscars Academy Awards, according to NOSC, the nation’s official selection body for the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences.

The NOSC chairperson, Chineze Anyaene-Abonyi, stated that the committee was sorry to announce that it had been unable to discover a qualified entry.

according to a statement signed by Abonyi, the 15-member community was unable to agree on three competing titles as a result of their voting preferences

Although the committee received three epic films following its call for submissions in August, it turned out that none of them will advance to the next stage owing to the voting patterns of members,” an excerpt of the statement reads per The Punch. The committee delivered a ‘no film eligibility’ verdict on September 3, 2022.

The committee oversees Nigerian applications each year and selects the finest ones for the international feature film category, which was established by the Academy to honor films from throughout the world.

Since the NOSC committee last presented a potential Oscar contender in 2020 with Desmond Obviagele’s “The Milkmaid,” this will be the second consecutive “non-eligibility” decision.

After several weeks of discussion, the committee declared there will be no submission in October 2021.

Meanwhile, before the NOSC announcement, Kunle Afolayan and Mo Abudu announced that their non-English films, “Anikulapo” and “Elesin Oba,” would have a brief theatrical run.

Even fans of Femi Adebayo’s “King Of Thieves” had hoped to spark interest in the committee, ahead of Oscars 2023
