Two popular Nintendo mobile games are being removed from Belgium over new gambling laws. A new law in Belgium has regarded in-game loot boxes as gambling. The two games are Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes.

An official statement made on the Nintendo’s Belgian site read,

“Due to the current unclear situation in Belgium regarding certain in-game revenue models, we have decided to end the service for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes in Belgium. It will, therefore, no longer be possible to play and download the games from Tuesday, 27th August 2019.”

The two mobile games have loot box-style systems. This means that players have to buy digital currencies which they use to buy items and characters. Players are usually made to buy more currencies if they are trying to get a rare item or character. However, the game sometimes distributes free currencies but in very limited amounts.

Players in Belgium now have until 27th August 2019 to use the in-game currencies they have left before it will stop working. Afterwards, gamers will be unable to play or download these games. Nintendo has also now said they will no longer release any new games that have a similar payment method in Belgium.

Game developers, Square Enix, has had to pull out three of its mobile games from the Belgian market recently. EA has also had to stop selling in-game currency in FIFA 19 games sold in the European company. All of these is equally because of these new gambling laws in Belgium.

Meanwhile, these new loot box law may be hitting the US soon. The United States Federal Trade Commission says it plans a hearing on it later in the year 2019.
